Filial Therapy
In Filial Therapy parents learn some of the techniques used in Play Therapy. They then put these skills into action with their children during weekly, special play times at home whilst being fully supported by their therapist.
From an adult's perspective, the techniques aim to help parents (or primary caregivers) understand their children more and see the world and its rules and quirks from their children's point of view. They help to equip parents with simple tools and skills when they're struggling with things like boundaries, being listened to, inappropriate behaviour, a general lack of, or disruptive, communication, as well as, a feeling of emotional distance with their child/children.

From a child's perspective, the techniques help them to feel heard and understood by their parents (or caregivers). Boundaries are provided in clearer, more consistent ways making it easier for them to navigate family rules, conventions and principles. The one-to-one play sessions help children to feel closer to their parents/caregivers, allowing for greater honesty, openness and trust.

Without relinquishing their own authority, parents discover that, thanks to these special circumstances children open up more, problems are reduced and the parent-child relationship gets stronger both during the play sessions but also in daily life, making for happier, healthier families.
